The Faithful
Fewer than the population of a small town, scattered over the whole earth, they keep what empires could not extinguish. Once the faith of millions under the Achaemenid sun, the Good Religion now burns in perhaps a hundred and ten thousand breasts — in the lanes of Mumbai, the desert quarters of Yazd, the quiet suburbs of Toronto and London. The census of nations counts them as a rounding error. We count them as the whole reckoning: every name below is a coal carried through thirteen centuries of wind.

The Nine Eternal Fires
Only nine fires on earth hold the rank of Ātash Bahrām — the Fire of Victory, gathered from sixteen kinds of flame and enthroned like a king. One burns in Iran; eight among the Parsis of India. None has been allowed to die.
Yazd Ātash Bahrām
The mother-fire of the homeland — burning unbroken since c. 470 CE, enthroned in its present temple in 1934.
Iranshah, Udvada
The "King of Iran" — consecrated by the refugees in the 8th century, carried through fen and forest, resting at Udvada since 1742.
Navsari Ātash Bahrām
Raised by the priestly town of the Bhagarias after the Iranshah departed their keeping.
Modi Ātash Bahrām
One of the twin fires of Surat, enthroned in the same year as its rival — a quarrel resolved by two crowns.
Vakil Ātash Bahrām
The second crown of Surat, consecrated by the Sanjana priests in the city of the old factories.
Dadiseth Ātash Bahrām
The first Fire of Victory in Bombay, endowed by the merchant Dadiseth in the Kadmi rite.

Raised by the great shipbuilding house of Wadia, whose vessels carried the flag of two empires.
Banaji Ātash Bahrām
The Kadmi fire of the house of Banaji, burning above the lanes of the old Fort.
Anjuman Ātash Bahrām
The people's fire — raised not by one purse but by the whole anjuman, the gathered community.
The figures on this chart are scholarly estimates drawn from community surveys and national censuses, c. 2012–2020 (FEZANA demographic studies, the Indian census of 2011, and Iranian official counts); they shift with every decade and every definition of who may be counted. The Order does not quarrel with the demographers. We count embers, not heads.
